The Growth Cycle of Hair

In order to understand your hair loss, it is important to know how the hair grows in the first place.  Like every other living thing on earth, hair has its own growth cycle.  When part of this cycle is disturbed or stopped due to physical or chemical influences, hair loss ensues.

At any point in time, approximately 90% of your hair is in a growing phase, and 10% is in a resting phase.  The growing phase can last as little as two years, and as long as six.  Resting hairs typically do so for two to three months.  After a hair’s growing then resting phase, it will die and fall out, and then a new hair will grow from the same follicle.  Here is where the problem usually begins.  Hair loss and baldness typically result from follicles failing to produce new hairs after the former resting hair dies and falls out.

Your hair follicles are microscopic holes buried in the fat layer of your scalp.  Blood nourishes the growing region through tiny capillaries, which is supported by an erector muscle.  The growing hair then receives proper coating and protection from the sebaceous gland.  This, of course, is assuming you are not balding.  The follicle temperature stays at the normal body temperature, and is not affected by extreme hot or cold weather.

We typically have both Vellus, also known as “baby” hairs, and Terminal hairs, which are the longer, typical adult hairs.  Follicles in people who are balding continually shrink, becoming smaller and shorter, causing the hairs growing from them to look more like Vellus hairs.

It is possible to regrow hair in follicles that are not doing so naturally.  However, you must act quickly.  As soon as you notice your hair loss, it’s important to take action immediately for the best results.  Generally, the longer you wait, the less dramatic your results will be.

Excessive androgens or estrogens are typical aggravators of hair follicle death.  The increased levels of these hormones in your system can essentially speed up the life cycle of the follicle, thus causing your hair loss.

One of the only approved over the counter medicines for hair regrowth is Minoxidil, which is the active ingredient in Regaine.  It promotes hair growth by encouraging vasodilation, or blood vessel dilation, in and around the hair follicle.  Continued use is the best way to prevent further loss and reactivate hair follicles.
